Th is book is the culmination of many years work on ancient synagogues which started as a multidisciplinary research project at Lund University (Sweden) in 1997. Th e participants of this project have published a number of books and articles on diff erent aspects of the ancient synagogue, including its origin, nature, architecture, hermeneutics, and language, as well as on the process of separation between Jews and Christians. Th e book consists of fi ve chapters. Chapter 1 (Introduction) briefl y discusses such topics as “Th e Synagogue in Ancient Writings and Modern Studies”, “Th e Current State of Research”, “Topics in Synagogue Research”, “Tools for Synagogue Studies”, “Th e Organiza- tion and Aim of the Present Collection of Synagogue Sources”.
