SCHEICK THIS ESSAY REVIEWS THE TITLEPAGES of several sixteenth-century editions of the Bible with an eye to the latent codes of meaning embedded in the structural elements of their illustrations. If, as has been claimed (Shuger 5), Renaissance versions of Biblical narratives are in effect cultural documents, so likewise are the titlepage ornaments of Renaissance Bibles. As Reformation versions of the Renaissance artist's strategic management of geometric design (Panofsky 27-36), especially in tutoring the direction of eye-movement (Edgerton 17-20), these titlepage images frequently convey-represent rather than illustrate {Hermeren 70-73)-theological and political implications. Their design often registers the artist's acute awareness of the power of images, particularly their function in the highly charged arena of religious beliefs. The structural arrangement of the seemingly obvious pictorial matter of these titlepages often includes a subtle and generally overlooked type of Reformation and Counter-Reformation propaganda concerning the representation of authority. The locus of authority, destabilized in part by the legacy of Gutenberg's Bible (Eisenstein, Revolution 183), was one of the most volatile civil and ecclesiastical issues of the sixteenth century.
