REMEMBRANCE ARI SIIRIÄINEN, 16.11.1939 - 9.12.2004 Ari Siiriäinen, Professor emeritus of archaeology at University of Helsinki, was well known internationally and nationally as an archaeologist and explorer. Ari's research interests covered huge geographies and stretches of time. Even though his archaeological career started in the early 1960s in northern Finland, and most of his early work concentrated on Finnish archaeology, he was not bound to this. His subsequent expeditions ranged geographically from Greenland to South-East Asia and temporally from the earliest Stone Age to present day. Despite all the other interests, African archaeology always had a special place in his heart. Ari was born in the now Russian-owned town of Vyborg (Viipuri) 16.11.1939 on the verge of the Finnish Winter War. He was just a few weeks old when his mother packed him in a basket and set him forth on his first journey when the town was evacuated. It is his journeys for which he is perhaps best remembered, besides his vast scientific work. His favourite reading, already as a kid, were books about exploration and adventure in the dark, unknown continents.
