Recherches archéologiques à Dia is the account of the investigation, over several field seasons, of the site of Dia (Inner Niger Delta, Mali) by an international team funded by the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry. The book is written wholly in French by 28 authors, attached to French (9 individuals), Dutch (6), Belgian (5), British (4), Malian (3) and American (1) institutions. The principal authors have a long-standing involvement in raising awareness of the evil of archaeological looting, and the Dia archaeological investigations were part of a larger project of support to the conservation of the heritage of Mali. The horrific statistics collected by members of the team at 83 locations of the Inner Niger Delta (pp. 17-19; table 1.3.2) show that by 1996 a quarter of sites had been plundered in a systematic and organised way for terracotta figurines and pottery -- a fivefold increase over the situation some five years http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Journal of African Archaeology Brill
