A historian of public opinion in modern Europe, he is currently at work on a book examining changing Western views on colonialism as seen through American, British, and French fi lms made during the era of decolonization. Yunxiang Gao is Assistant Professor of Asian History at Ryerson University in Toronto. Her recent publications include an article in Gender and History : “Th e Nationalist and Feminist Discourses on ‘Jianmei’ (Fit/Robust Beauty) during China’s ‘National Crisis’ in the 1930s.” It also was translated and pub- lished in Chinese by the Shanghai Sanlian Bookstore in 2009. Gao’s article “Sex, Sports, and ‘National Crisis’ 1931-1945: Th e ‘Athletic Movie Star’ Li Lili (1915-2005)” appeared in Modern Chinese Literature and Culture in 2010. She is fi nalizing her book manuscript “Women Warriors: Sports, Gender and Nation State during China’s ‘National Crisis’ from 1931 to 1945” for publication. Paul G.
