Notes on Contributors Zach Fredman is a Center for Liberal Arts and Social Sciences Post-Doctoral Fellow at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He earned his Ph.D. in 2016 from Boston University. At ntu , he is working on a book manuscript entitled From Allies to Occupiers: Living with the u.s. Military in Wartime China, 1941–1951 . Rustin Gates is an Associate Professor of History at Bradley University, Peoria, Illinois, and holds an m.a. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in Modern Japanese History. A specialist in the history of Japanese international relations, his research has appeared in a variety of outlets, including scholarly journals, edited volumes, and online postings. His current research project examines Japan’s Self-Defense Forces in the context of us -Japan relations during the Cold War. Matthew D. Linton is a doctoral candidate in history at Brandeis University. His dissertation, Understanding the Mighty Empire: China Studies and the Construction of Liberal Consensus, 1928–1980 , explores Chinese area studies’ development and its relationship to American empire-building in the mid-20th century. His academic interests include the histories of liberal internationalism, the social sciences, and the relationship between ideas and institutions. Matthew lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
