Black in Oxford in May 2004 the Journal of Ancient Near Eastern Religions has lost one of its most active supporters and editorial board members. When in 1998, plans were made for a journal specifically dedicated to the expres- sions of religious feelings on all levels of ancient Near Eastern socie- ties, Jeremy immediately embraced the idea, convinced as he was that “in pre-modern societies, religion had a much more pervasive influence on every aspect of life.” (Jeremy Black/Anthony Green, Gods, Demons and Symbols of Ancient Mesopotamia (London 1992), 9). He actively solicited manuscripts, he was always there for advice, and many manuscripts profited from his insightful comments and sug- gestions. We mourn a dear friend and are immensely grateful for everything he did.
