I S S U E S A N D R E S P O N S E S Setting the Record Straight: A Response to Schaller's Review The kindest thing I can say about Michael Schaller's review of m y book, The Pacific Century, in the Summer 1994 issue is that he obvi- ously did not read it. To begin with, he ignored the theme of the book a n d the p u r p o s e for w h i c h it was written. I d i d not set out to write "a history of the Pacific region." My book does present the story of the American-East Asian relationship over the past c e n t u r y a n d a h a l f - a n d suggests h o w it m a y further develop. The subtitle of the book, America and Asia in a Changing World, clearly expresses this theme. As I wrote in the Introduction: "This book has been w r i t t e n to examine a n d revalue the vital a n d increasingly close comity w e [i.e., Ameri- cans]
