Iconography of the Devotional Aesthetic: A Study of the Title Page to La Ceppède's Théorèmes Iconography of the Devotional Aesthetic: A Study of the Title Page to La Ceppede's Theoremes Lynette C. Black Jean de la Ceppede (1545-1622) was known among his contemporaries not only as a legal advisor to the Parlement of Aix but also as a writer of devotional poetry. His sonnets, probably written over a period of at least twenty years, were published at Toulouse in 1613 as Les Theoremes sur Je Sacre Mystere de Nostre Redemption. The first part of Les Theoremes consists of three hundred sonnets on the crucifixion with ample notes explaining the sources of the theological points in the poems. Part Two of Les Theoremes, including two hundred fifteen sonnets on the resurrection, appeared in 1622. Iconographic title pages, identical except for the information on the en tablatures , preface the two parts, according to the facsimile edition produced by Jean Rousset in 1966. 1 The iconography of the title page thus applies to both parts-the crucifixion and the resurrection-which together constitute the Christian mystery, the subject of the work.
