HOW THE COLLECTION OF ANTIQUITIES FROM THE ANCIENT WORLD IN THE IVANOVO REGIONAL MUSEUM OF ART WAS BUILT UP AND PROSPERED G. SOLNTSEVA (Ivanovo) The collection of antiquities pertaining to the art and culture of the Ancient World held in the Ivanovo Regional Museum of Art includes items relating to the history of Egypt, Greece and Rome. The small range of items from Ancient Egypt provides a representative idea of the worship of the dead and the art from the time of the Middle Kingdom to the era of the Ptolemies. The heterogenous Classical collection consists of original articles of a utilitarian nature - examples of vase-painting, tombstones, an urn for ashes, mosaics, a sculptured portrait of Faustina II - ranging in time from the Archaic period to the 3rd century AD, and also latter-day imitations. These antiquities were assembled prior to 1917 by a local collector - the factory-owner and merchant of the First Guild, Dmitrii Gennadievich Burylin (1852-1924) - and formed part of his enormous collection of "rarities and ancient treasures" which included coins, textiles, Masonic items, books and manuscripts, foreign and Russian works of art and weapons.
