Finds of Sasanian Gems in the Otrar Oasis FINDS OF SASANIAN GEMS IN THE OTRAR OASIS E.A. SMAGULOV Archaeological investigations of the burial grounds of the middle of the 1 st mill. A.D. in the northeastern regions of Central Asia connected with the Syr- Darya basin revealed a number of burials containing Sasanian engraved gems (seals), most of them of the "false ring" or ellipsoid type. A whole series of similar gems were found in the lower course of the Syr-Darya when excavating burials of the Jety-Asar culture.' There were earlier chance finds of Sasanian gems from the middle course of the Syr-Darya.2 From there probably originate several pieces formerly belonging to the collections of V.N. Kastalskij, N.F. Petrovskij and N.N. Veselovskij, now in the collection of the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg.3 3 This article is dedicated to several chance finds of Sasanian gems made in the Otrar oasis, in Southern Kazakhstan, where the Arys' river flows into the Syr-Darya.4 We give their description below. 1.
