Bactrian Coins in the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts BACTRIAN COINS IN THE PUSHKIN STATE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS N. SMIRNOVA The numismatic collection of the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts has a long history.l Its core was formed by the collection of the Numismatic Cabinet of the Moscow Imperial University which was assembled in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Greek coins from this collection were published in 1891 by A.V. Oreshnikov.2 At that time there were fifteen Graeco-Bactrian and Indo-Greek coins, whose provenance is unknown.3 With the University collection as a starting point, the Museum gradually ac- quired a distinguished collection of paintings, drawings and of various anti- quities including coins.4 At present its collection numbers 50 coins of the Greek kings of Bactria and India, excluding imitations. This comparatively modest number can be explained by the irregular character of the Museum's numismatic acquisitions: single coins came from time to time either from private collections or from state collections. Thus one tetradrachm of Euthydemus and two drachms of Menander were acquired by the Museum in 1941, together with a vast collection of ancient coins (over ten thousand) which had formerly belonged to A.G.
