Book Review The book under review is an edited volume on archaeobotanical research in Africa, comprising a selection of papers presented at the 5th International Workshop of African Archaeobotany (IWAA) held at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London in July 2006. The IWAA has convened every three years since 1994, and with the exception of the 2012 meeting in Vienna all conference proceedings are published (Barakat 1995; Hather 1995; Mitka & Wasylikowa 1995; van der Veen 1995; Wasylikowa et al. 1995; van der Veen 1999; Neumann et al. 2003; Cappers 2007; Fahmy et al. 2011). This volume comprises a selection of papers from the 2006 meeting, in addition to other contributions that follow the editor's aim to broaden the scope of African archaeobotany to include the study of agricultural origins, the role of plant foods in human evolution beginning in the Palaeolithic, the importance of agricultural change in the past, and current archaeobotanical research of complex societies.
