SAPRYKIN This article is dedicated to the illustrious memory of Vera Shcherbakova In 1978 a sculpture consisting of a group of Ž gures was brought to the Historical and Archaeological Park in Chersonesos: it was a chance Ž nd from the Heraclean peninsula near the town of Sebastopol. According to those who had found the sculpture, it had come from Delagardova Balka, i.e. from terrain that was part of the rural area in the immediate vicinity of Tauric Chersonese in the Crimea. The dimensions of the sculpture were 27 : 5 £ 20 : 5 cms. At the present time it is in the museum of the Chersonesos Historical and Archaeological Park (Inventory No. KP 182003) (Figs. 1-4). The group consists of a standing semi- naked Ž gure of the goddess Aphrodite or Roman Venus, whose left hand is bent at the elbow and clasping a round object — probably an apple, the traditional symbol of the goddess.
