ANCIENT GOLD COINS IN THE ABKHAZIAN STATE MUSEUM MIKHAIL G. ABRAMZON Three rare ancient gold coins from Abkhazia in the collection of the Abkhazian State Museum (ASM) (inv. ASM 516, ASM 335, ASM 84-87) are crucial for the study of the monetary circulation and coinage system of ancient Colchis. 1. The earliest coin is a stater of Philip III Arrhidaeus (323-316 BC) found in 1970 on the coast of the Black Sea near the village of Agudzera in the Gulripshian region of present-day Abkhazia (Fig. 1). 1 Obv. Helmeted head of Athena r.; the helmet is decorated with an image of a coiled snake. Rev . I I O Nike in tunic standing l., holding wreath and ship’s mast; buckle in left field, below monogram – letter A under crescent. Weight 8.58 g. Size 18 mm. Inv. No. ASM 516 . Price 1991, pl. 15, No. P13. Müller argues that staters with this mint-mark and monogram were struck in an unknown area of Middle Greece ( Incertii Graeciae Septentrionalis ), 2 but Price has shown that they should be attributed to a mint of Lampsacus. 3 The staters of this type were issued by both Alexander the Great
