ABRAMZON Three rare ancient gold coins from Abkhazia in the collection of the Abkhazian State Museum (ASM) (inv. ASM 516, ASM 335, ASM 84-87) are crucial for the study of the monetary circulation and coinage system of ancient Colchis. 1. The earliest coin is a stater of Philip III Arrhidaeus (323-316 BC) found in 1970 on the coast of the Black Sea near the village of Agudzera in the Gulripshian region of present-day Abkhazia (Fig. 1). 1 Obv. Helmeted head of Athena r.; the helmet is decorated with an image of a coiled snake. Rev . I I O Nike in tunic standing l., holding wreath and ship’s mast; buckle in left field, below monogram – letter A under crescent. Weight 8.58 g. Size 18 mm. Inv. No. ASM 516 . Price 1991, pl. 15, No. P13.
