A Roman Phalera From the Urals Region Near Perm A ROMAN PHALERA FROM THE URALS REGION NEAR PERM A.V. KOLOBOV, A.F. MELNICHUK, and N.V. KULYABINA In 1987-1994 the archaeological expedition of Perm State University was excavating the Mokino Burial-ground (near Perm) which dates from the 4th- 5th centuries. Apart from burials relating to the local Glyadenov Culture some burials of soldiers were found, which revealed nomad features, possibly reflecting Sarmation influence: long iron swords with sheaths decorated with gold and silver leaf, multi-faceted comelian beads, belt sets made of bronze and silver. Distinctive structural aspects of the burial pits and the presence of limestone pieces scattered over their floor could also be interpreted as features belying Sarmatian influence. In one of these burials an engraved stone - bluish grey chalcedony - was found next to pieces of an iron dagger or sword (see Figure). The gemstone was oval in shape: it was 44 mms high, 35 mms wide and 22 mms thick. On the reverse of the stone there were two grooves which intersected to form a cross. Chip-like damage was noted on the front and, in particular, on the reverse of the stone.
