Kaufman Georgia State University During the 1960s, the P e o p l e ' s Republic of China (PRC) faced two periods of severe turbulence. The first came out of the Great Leap Forward, w h i c h began in 1958. Although the Great Leap Forward of- ficially e n d e d in 1960, its effects reverberated well into the decade. The second w a s the Cultural Revolution, w h i c h the Chinese leader- ship initiated in 1966 a n d terminated in early 1969. During both peri- o d s , t h e U n i t e d S t a t e s k n e w C h i n a w a s in t u r m o i l , b u t t h e administrations of John F. Kennedy a n d Lyndon B.
