A Matrix With a Griffin From Nympheus A MATRIX WITH A GRIFFIN FROM NYMPHEUS N.F. FEDOSEEV Contemporary studies in archaeology are based, as a rule, on data drawn from archaeological excavations or stored in museum collections. At the same time a source like private collections is practically unused. One can only guess how powerful the cultural layer of this terra incognita is. Private collections can be studied along two lines: inventory and statistical analysis of ordinary archaeological material (stamps, coins, utensils, etc.) and publication of unique finds. ".... The stone matrix from the private collection of N.J. Balakshev (Kerch) belongs to the latter. It was found in 1972 at the fortified town of Nympheus (excavation site ABC)' and is a stone tablet rectangular in shape with a representation of a female griffin. It measures 7.5 x 10.2 x 1.5 cm. The frontal representation of a griffin is cut in firm laminated grey marl quar- ried locally (fig. 1). The obverse surface is polished, the sides show traces of crude treatment. On one of the sides two lines of a clearly functional purpose are drawn by a sharp cutting tool. The reverse side of the matrix has not been polished.
