Abstract
In 1986 the chance find was made at Chersonesus of a head of Mithras, dated to the 2nd/3rd quarter of the 2nd c. A.D. and of provincial Roman origin. Close parallels to the piece suggest its provenance in a Mithraeum which provides new evidence for the spread of the cult in the N. Black Sea region. This is commonly associated with the stay there of Roman troops from Lower Moesia and Thrace. Similarities with heads of Mithras from Escus in Lower Moesia point to the possibility that the Chersonesus head was left by Legio V Macedonica.
