This book is a guide for b e g i n n i n g e n t r e p r e n e u r s r a t h e r than about p e r s o n a l computers; h o w e v e r , it seems r e l e v a n t to the PC C o m m u n i t y for several reasons. One is that Don L a n c a s t e r is v e r y m u c h a p e r s o n a l c o m p u t e r i s t , h a v i n g w r i t t e n m a n y fine e l e c t r o n i c s "cookbooks" and a r t i c l e s for p e r s o n a l c o m p u t i n g magazines. F u r t h e r m o r e , it seems to me that just about e v e r y one w h o is w o r k i n g w i t h p e r s o n a l c o m p u t e r s has some sort of e n t e r p r i s e u n d e r w a y or in the back of his mind. Don w r i t e s c l e a r l y and the book is fun r e a d i n g even if you d o n ' t plan to start a business. The style and a t t i t u d e s are m u c h m o r e early W h o l e Earth C a t a l o g than H a r v a r d B u s i n e s s School. For example, Don tells us that the best p o s s i b l e p a t e n t prot e c t i o n you can get is to p u b l i s h y o u r k e y secrets in a n a t i o n al m a g a z i n e or other w i d e l y c i r c u l a t e d journal, and that h a v i n g a d v a n c e f i n a n c i n g for y o u r e n t e r p r i s e is the w o r s t p o s s i b l e thing you can do. His ideal e n t e r p r i s e is d i v e r s i f i e d , m o d e s t in size, and o w n e d by the man w h o runs it. The book v a l u e s autonomy, craft, i n t e g r i t y and w o r k i n g in a "proper" manner. I feel that these same v a l u e s tend to be found in the PC Community.
