This article is an update on the research and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia. In the past five years, endocrine research has focused on neurotransmitters in anorexia nervosa and treatment research has centered on bulimia. Introduction Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are behavioral eating disorders that should be considered syndromes. In the past decade the increased need to develop clinical treatment programs for anorexia nervosa and bulimia patients has stimulated considerable research in these disorders; which in turn has produced epidemiological, clinical, and physiological information necessary for revising a classification of the eating disorders. Diagnosis and Classification Bulimia is merely a term that means binge eating. It is a behavior that has become common among young female students both in universities and, more recently, in high schools. However, not all persons who engage in binge eating have a psychiatric diagnosis. Bulimia is a behavior that occurs in about 50% of anorexia nervosa patients and can also occur in a normal weight condition associated with psychological symptomatology. The lat ter clinical entity is now called bulimia nervosa or bulimia syndrome.
