The uses of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) and statistical poweranalysis within psychological research are critically discussed. The articlelooks at the problems of relying solely on NHST when dealing with small andlarge sample sizes. The use of power-analysis in estimating the potential errorintroduced by small and large samples is advocated. Power analysis is notrecommended as a replacement to NHST but as an additional source of informationabout the phenomena under investigation. Moreover, the importance of conceptualanalysis in relation to statistical analysis of a hypothesis is emphasised.
