Abstract The objectives of this book on "Fluid and Electrolyte Therapy: A Unified Approach" by Drs. Pickering and Fisher are "to present in concise form the fundamental principles regulating the volume and composition of body fluids and a simplified though rational procedure by which the physician can assay and correct disturbances in these fluids as encountered in various pathological states." The book is divided into three sections—Fluid and Electrolyte Homeostasis, General Treatment Plan, and Therapy of Specific Disorders. The first section is an exhaustive, though concise and sometimes too brief, exposition of the factors which influence hydrogen ion concentration, volume, osmolarity, and electrolyte concentrations of the body fluids. A discussion of clinical considerations follows each subdivision. In the second section, General Treatment Plan, the authors detail therapy in the three categories of maintenance, contemporary replacement, and deficit repair.
