In Memoriam: Joseph B. Slowinski 1962–2001

In Memoriam: Joseph B. Slowinski 1962–2001 Herpetological Monographs, 16, 2002, i 2002 by The Herpetologists' League, Inc. Joseph B. Slowinski, 19622001 Cooking on the beach on Frazer Hog Cay, Bahamas, March 1986. When you receive this volume of Herpetological Monographs, it will be approximately the first anniversary of the passing of Joe Slowinski (12 September 2001). A more formal obituary will be forthcoming (or already published) in Copeia, but I wanted to use my editorial privilege to just write a few words to honor and remember Joe in this journal. Joe came to the University of Miami via the University of Kansas. Jay Savage liked to appoint more senior students to show the rookies the ropes and Jay assigned Joe to me. We became close friends and simply had a lot of fun. We collected together in Costa Rica, the Bahamas, and Jamaica and had a ball doing it. Joe was already a great collector and he was impervious to the discomforts associated with the blue collar aspects of field work. Way back then it was clear that he was destined to conduct the large scale expeditions that he began at the California Academy of Sciences. Although still young when he died, Joe had already made a mark in herpetology and was on his way to becoming one of the next prominent herpetologists. I know that in general the science of herpetology and the scientists that knew him miss him. He was a great friend. It's been a year and I know I miss him. Cheers, Joe, this one is for you. Brian I.
