J. Parasitol., 95(6), 2009, p. 1286 F American Society of Parasitologists 2009 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF PARASITOLOGISTS Eighty-Fourth Annual Business Meeting 17 August 2009 Knoxville Crowne Plaza, Knoxville, Tennessee I. CALL TO ORDER The business meeting was called to order by President Bruce Conn at approximately 1505 hr on Monday, 17 August 2009 in the Tennessee Ballroom of the Knoxville Crowne Plaza. President Conn made his opening comments, thanking the membership for a successful meeting, then began the awards presentations (see below); other ASP business followed. After the awards were presented, President Conn turned the meeting over to Renee Carlton, chair of the Tellers Committee, who announced the winners of the 2009 election. President Conn then thanked the outgoing Council Members-at-Large and outgoing Nominating Committee members. See Council meeting minutes for lists of these individuals. He also thanked organizations and individuals providing support for the meetings and the Coccidiosis Conference; see also the Council meeting minutes for a list of these sponsors. (3) Voted to limit the Journal of Parasitology Editor, the Newsletter Editor, and Scientific Program Officer(s) to 3, 5-year terms; and, (4) Voted to table all pending motions relative to By-laws changes. By-laws changes require votes by the membership, so members should expect such changes, first approved by Council, to be included in a future ballot. VI. SECRETARYTREASURER REPORT John Janovy, Jr. presented the SecretaryTreasurer's report including membership, subscription data, cash flow data, and performance of endowment accounts, and indicated that the Society was solvent but that institutional subscriptions were an on-going concern. Student membership was up over recent years, probably due to the online-only options available for the Journal of Parasitology. SecretaryTreasurer Janovy made special mention of Beth Wilkins and her many contributions to the Society through handling of bank account information, investment data, correspondence, and some web site maintenance. He also called Ms. Wilkins to the podium and presented her with a plaque for her 6 yr of service to ASP. See Council minutes for more details regarding membership and finances, including comments about the electronic publishing agreement with Allen Press. II. CLARK P. READ MENTOR AWARD Patrick C. Hanington presided over the Mentor Award ceremony, introducing Miodrag (Mike) Belosovic, University of Alberta, as the 2009 recipient. Dr. Belosovic accepted the award and delivered his acceptance speech entitled ``Mentor and Mentee: A Lasting Relationship.'' III. ASHTON CUCKLER NEW INVESTIGATOR AWARD Kevin Lafferty introduced Ryan F. Hechinger, University of California, Santa Barbara, as the 2009 winner of the Ashton Cuckler New Investigator Award. Dr. Hechinger accepted the award and thanked the Society. VII. JOURNAL OF PARASITOLOGY EDITOR Gerald Esch had to leave the meetings early, but provided a written report which was presented by President Conn (see also Council minutes). Dr. Esch especially acknowledged the service to ASP of Vickie Hennings, his assistant; Ms. Hennings received a plaque in recognition of her 16 yr of service to the society. IV. OTHER AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENTS President Conn formally acknowledged other awardees who had received recognition and made presentations earlier in the meeting including Dr. G. Valkiunas, Vilnius University (R. Barclay McGhee Lecturer), Dr. Kevin Lafferty, U.S. Geological Survey (H. B. Ward Medal), and Armand Kuris, University of California, Santa Barbara (Eminent Parasitologist Lecturer). SecretaryTreasurer John Janovy, Jr. announced recipients of the Willis A. Reid, Jr. Student Research Grant Awards: Jennifer Carlson, San Francisco State University (graduate) and Amandi Patti, University of Massachusetts (undergraduate). Shelbi Russell, University of Kansas, received the Outstanding Student Paper award, with Dominique Freyre, University of Nebraska Omaha and Sriveny Dangoudoubiyam, McGill University, receiving Meritorious Student Paper awards. Reg Blaylock then announced the Student Travel Award recipients (see Council minutes for a list of students receiving travel support). VIII. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM OFFICER Herman Eure gave a report of preparations and planning for the 2009 meeting (his and Kelli Sapp's first as Scientific Program Officers), reviewing the lessons learned. IX.
