Parasitol., 89(6), 2003, p. 1128 American Society of Parasitologists 2003 78TH ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING 4 AUGUST 2003 WESTIN NOVA SCOTIAN HOTEL, HALIFAX, NOVA SCOTIA I. CALL TO ORDER The meeting was called to order by President Robin Overstreet at 1500 hr. The Secretary-Treasurer reported on the Society's finances and membership trends and presented a synopsis of the reports of society officers and committees, together with a summary of significant actions of Council (see previous section). The motions considered at the Council Meeting and the respective outcomes of these considerations are listed below: Motions included in the Council Meeting Agenda Motion 1: Acceptance of minutes of the 88th Council Meeting, 1998 (passed). Motion 2: Approval of new members added since the last meeting (passed). Motion 3: To enable and encourage members to pay dues for 3 yr (passed). Motion 4: To approve 3-yr initial payment for memberships for students at half price (passed). Motions made during the meeting Motion i: To approve Ft. Worth as the site of the 2007 meeting (tabled). Motion ii: To approve 2 Distinguished Members Emeritus and pass on to member vote (passed). Motion iii: To approve transfer of all past Journal of Parasitology volumes to PDF (passed). VII. HONORARY MEMBERS AND DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS EMERITI COMMITTEE Committee Chair John Sullivan reported the selection of Raymond T. Damian and K. Darwin Murrell. VIII. IN MEMORIAM COMMITTEE Committee Chair Ralph Eckerlin announced the names of members of the Society who had passed away during the past year, and a moment of silence was observed in memory of these colleagues (see previous section for names). IX. STUDENT AWARDS Committee Chair Kelli Sapp reported on the awarding of travel grants ranging between $300 and 500. Recipients of the travel awards were Stephanie Bennett, Jaime Costales, Charles Criscione, Angela Delaney, Joel Fellis, Eleni Gentekaki, Luis Gondim, Ryan Hechinger, Julian Hillyer, Meaghan Hunter, Francisco Jimenez-Ruiz, Matthew Kern, Jessica Light, Ally McIlwaine, Nick Negovetich, Kerry Padgett, Greg Sandland, Anna Schotthoefer, Michelle Steinauer, Chris Whipps, Lorie Whitcombe, Megan Wise, and Noah Zimmerman. In addition, travel grants were awarded to regional student paper award winners Matthew Bolek (Southwestern Association of Parasitologists) and Elizabeth Borda (The Helminthological Society of Washington). This year's merit awards were as follows: Best Student Presentation: Noah Zimmerman, Michelle Steinauer. Honorable Mention: Laura Duclos, Lorie Whitcombe, Charles Criscione, Matthew Bolek. II. JOURNAL OF PARASITOLOGY EDITOR Gerald W. Esch commented on recent developments and future forecasts for the Journal. III. SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM OFFICER Don Duszynski summarized the dates and locations of future meetings, as detailed in the previous section. X. NEW BUSINESS President Overstreet announced that the annual auction had raised over $4,400 in support of the student travel fund. IV. ASHTON CUCKLER NEW INVESTIGATOR AWARD FOR 2003 Rebecca Cole, Chair of the Award Committee, presented the award to Dr. Jason Curtis of Purdue University. XI. RESOLUTIONS COMMITTEE Vince Connors read the Committee's report, which recognized all who helped make the 78th Annual Meeting a success. V. CLARK P. READ MENTOR AWARD FOR 2004 On behalf of Award Committee Chair Rhonda Pinckney, Committee Member Sherman Hendrix announced the recipient of the Award, Sherwin Desser of the University of Toronto. The award will be presented at the next annual meeting. XII. RECOGNITION OF PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE AND ADJOURNMENT Robin Overstreet passed the gavel to Bruce Christensen, who presented Dr. Overstreet with a plaque in recognition of his service to the Society in 2002­2003.
