ACCEPTANCE SPEECH OF THE 2005 HENRY BALDWIN WARD MEDAL J. Parasitol., 91(6), 2005, pp. 1260–1264 q American Society of Parasitologists 2005 Gerardo Pe ´ rez-Ponce de Leo ´n former Ward medalists. Dan received the Award in 1985, and Eric in 1992. Looking at the list of former recipients of this medal, it is obvious that parasite systematists and evolutionary biologists have been well recognized by the Society. I am very proud to be part of that parasitological guild, and I am still astonished to be sharing that honor with them. It is not only an honor but a great responsibilty to keep working, to keep learn- ing from my colleagues and my students, to do my best every day to contribute to our field, and to uphold the trust that the Society has vested in me with this honor. As you must have undoubtedly noticed by this time, English is not my first language. I was born in Mexico City and I spent all my formative years in that crowded city of about 20 million inhabitants. Ever since I was a high school student, I was de- termined to go to the university and obtain a bachelor’s degree in biology.
