Desser Department of Zoology, University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M5S 3G5. e-mail: wired@zoo.utoronto.ca doctoral student, I was privileged to work in a small, dynamic parasitology department headed by my supervisor, Dr. Murray Fallis. Not only did I have the good fortune of working with a wonderful mentor but I also enjoyed the opportunity to rub elbows and ideas and to be influenced by inspiring scientists and fine people such as Roy Anderson, Gordon Bennett, Reino Freeman, and Ken Wright. The atmosphere in the laboratory was electric. Hardly a week passed without a group discussion on some interesting problem or the announcement of an excit- ing new discovery. We had a steady stream of visiting parasitologists from North America and abroad. These included, among many others, Nor- man Levine, Don Heyneman, John Holmes, Wilber Bullock, John Mackiewicz, Meir Yoeli, John Baker, Russell Lumsden, and P. C. C. Garnham, the Dean of malariologists. Our visitors presented lectures and interacted with the graduate students.
