This paper begins by drawing some lines of connection among manifestos, art and politics by reference to Marx and theories of the avant-garde as a basis for talking about education in the age of cognitive capitalism. In this respect the paper outlines a view concerning the design of educational futures and the creation of new knowledge within “knowledge cultures.” This is an account that rests upon an effective working history of the concept of freedom as a concept still unfolding especially in relation to forms of openness in publishing, scholarship, science and education. Having observed the links among openness, creativity and education the paper ends by discussing creativity as the new development paradigm in education.
